Overview
I love digital arts because it is so fantastic at allowing me experiment. I find new things about programs, but I can also learn more about myself in the ways that I use the tools given to me and how I make art. In Digital Arts we use photoshop, dreamweaver, and other programs. I can spend hours finding new textures, making cartoons, and finding myself actually understanding electronic art. Its a beautiful thing. If I want to use photographic elements in my work, I can incorporate them easily and in almost any way I like. I can borrow textures from wooden chopping boards or rusty pieces of metal. If I want a soft gradient in the background that goes from black to white, it's done in 20 seconds. Changed my mind, and now I want it to go from black to dark green to bright yellow? 30 more seconds and that's done too. I can modify, combine, change, or delete any of my layers at any time during my project. Digital arts lets me be creative, and with a great teacher like Roxy its one of my favorite classes.
Brave New World Visual Piece
This was the visual piece that went along with my project. I also made a social networking site that my classmates joined and pretended that they were in Brave New World. This painting represents the way we see Brave New World. When we first read it, it looks dark, unfair, and inhumane (the black splatter paint). After I looked closer though, I realized that this could be viewed as a utopia. The people there have all the world problems solved and everyone is universally happy. Isn't that what we all really want? This is represented by the colorful splatter paint. My person is in Brave New World, and is wearing rose colored glasses because of the 60's metaphor "Rose colored glasses make everything seem happier and better". All that Brave New World is doing is putting rose colored glasses on everyone. To see my project, press here.
The Adventure Of Venus
Before we even started to learn Adobe Flash, we had our Art History Unit. This animation was a way to incorporate ancient art with a computer program. This has been my favorite project by far!! I have always been more of a scientific person so this unit has been a little difficult for me to understand. Why end the Era? Why did the human brain evolve? A lot of these kinds of question popped up in my head during the Art History Unit. The two things that really captured my interest were how the brain formed, and how cavemen didn't start making landscape cave art until later on. First of all, it is very intriguing how humans started to put their own opinions and perspectives into things using representation. The idea that they learned what their opinions are is weird! How can that just happen? Also, I really like lanscape paintings and found it interesting that they didn't start painting them until the Neolithic time period! Cavemen must have been too caught up in depicting what they were doing (hunting, gathering...). When they started to have more time on their hands, they got to look around them and start understanding and appreciating their surroundings and the world.
Using Adobe Flash was REALLY REALLY hard! At first I didn't even understand what a frame was or how to make it! For about the first week or two, I kind of played around and didn't do anything, nor advocate for myself to get help. On about the third week, I decided I just needed to get this project over with and do a bad job. As I started to delve deeper into how Flash works, I got really intrigued. I started playing around with it on my free time, watching youtube videos, and going to help sessions with my Digital Arts teacher. I experimented with all kinds of things, and I can say that I like Flash more than any other program, even Photoshop. All that hard work really paid off because I am extremely proud of this animation!
My favorite tool to use in Flash was the motion and bone tool. I like to make things zoom, move, rotate...change. There are a LOT of motion tweens used in this animation. Almost everything that moves is a motion tween. Although the bone tool is not in this animation, I have experimented with it and I love the challenge of moving the joints of a cartoon character!!
I can definitely see myself using Flash in the future! I am doing cornstarch monsters for my sound project in physics, (to learn more, press here) and I think that it would be cool to do a stop motion animation with the cornstarch monsters! I already have started many other animations that are used in Flash. Those will be on my DP in a while.

Animation
Ever since we finished our ancient art history unit, we have been learning about Animations. There are two kind of animations that we could do: Stop Motion Animation and 2D Animation. To get started with our animation, we went to xtranormal.com to start off. This is an example of a computer animation. In 2D animation, we draw the picture and then make it move in the computer. Stop motion animation is where you move the 3D object, take a picture, move it, take a picture, and so on and so forth. This is my animation! Enjoy!
Ancient Art History
We have just finished our unit on ancient art history. The main growth the the human brain went through through Neolithic and Paleolithic times is that we started to switch from recognizing something to representing it. For example, the Waterworn Pebble is an example of of recognition because the cave men did not modify the pebble in any way. The picture below, the Hall of Bulls, is an example of representation because the cave man took his own ideas and expressed them visually. We learned about Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic time periods, The towns of Jericho and Catal Hoyuk and also Stonehenge. Then we made yucca paint brushes. Our next unit will be making animations with the content we learned here!
Self Portrait
The point of the self portrait was to present at our POL's, but also to express who we feel we are in an artistic way. This is my self portrait, and it definitely expresses who I am. All of these poses explain who I am. I'm cocky, sassy, daring, fun, crazy, creative, and hardworking. These words are around the whole picture to help explain who I am. Of course, superman is most of these things, so I thought it would be cool to compare myself to him. The two quotes are two of my favorite quotes, and I live my life by them. The mountains in the background are me because I grew up in Durango Colorado, and the mountains have helped me realize who I am, who I want to be, and what I enjoy. They have taught me to love and appreciate nature.

Calligraphy
Calligraphy is a skillful, artful type of writing. We have been practicing it for the past week, because it is fun to take time away from the computer, but also because it will be our name plates for our self portraits. I will have my self portrait available soon, and I will also present it at my POL's. To learn how to write in calligraphy, go here. To learn more about calligraphy itself, go here.
Different Effects of Text
The first kind of effect that is here is graphic text. You take another picture, take the image, and put it in a word. If you would like to learn how to do this, visit http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photoshop-text/text-effects/image-in-text/. The second kind of effect is called gel text. It is very popular and makes the text look squishy, like jello. If you would like to learn how to make this kind of text, go to http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photoshop-text/text-effects/gel/ The last kind of effect shown to the right, is called transparent text. This is my favorite text. You are pretty much making the color inside of the word disappear, and replacing it with whatever the background is. If you would like to learn how to make transparent text, go to http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/transparent-type/ For all kinds of effects of texts, go to http://naldzgraphics.net/tutorials/55-useful-text-effect-tutorials-in-photoshop/ or http://designrfix.com/resources/100-creative-photoshop-text-effects-tutorials |
Teacher Poster Project
The point of this project was so we could learn the basic tools and things we could do in Photoshop. The assignment was to take a teachers head and put it on something. I really enjoyed this project because I got to learn the basic tools of photoshop, but it was also really fun to make fun of our teachers. For the next year class, I would recomend picking your idea quickly so that you can get to work. That was one thing that really slowed me down. I think that I was really good at refining the edge on my pictures. I would have added more things on my picture and cut out my pictures a little more nicely, but overall I think I did an o.k job. If I could do this project again, I would try and use a texture because that would be really cool!
Color Theory
Color theory is a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual impacts of specific color combinations. The colors in the color wheel are red, yellow, green, orange, purple, yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green and yellow-green.

Understanding Light
Understanding Light
(Hard light, Soft Light, Transmitted Light, Reflected Light) Hard Light -Comes from any light source that is small -It acts like a small light bulb -Example: Sun on a clear day -High contrast -Sharp, crisp, hard edged shadows -Reveals texture Soft Light -Comes from any light source that has a large surface area -Example: Where the sun is shining through clouds -Low contrast -Hardly any shadows |
Transmitted Light
-You can see the light source in the picture Reflected Light -Bouncing off of another surface -Ex. Bouncing off water 3 Things for taking portraits: Communication, and choice of aperature and lens |
Art Elements and Principles ProjectThis project was so that our class could better understand the art elements and principles and the difference between the two categories. My partner and I had unity and value. My poster that I created was value. Value is the element of art that describes the darkness or lightness of an object. The definition of unity is a feeling of completeness created by the use of elements in the artwork.
